Air-coupled ultrasound propagation and novel-nondestructive bonding quality assessment of timber composites

Abstract

Security hazards in glued timber need to be addressed with periodical non-destructive testing. An air-coupled ultrasound (ACU) system capable of assessing glulam structures was developed and patented. A novel slanted inspection configuration achieves defect imaging of individual bonding planes. Finite- difference time-domain simulations successfully model ACU wave propagation through heterogeneous and anisotropic timber laminates. The inverse problem allows the tomographic reconstruction of bonding defects by time-reversing the experimentally recorded ultrasonic fields. Complementarily, the applicability of X-ray computed tomography to bonding defect detection was shown by means of a limited-angle method, which only requires a reduced number of projections parallel to the inspected glue lines.
