Abstract

Glued timber products are widely used in construction; health monitoring is necessary in order to prevent security hazards. Air-coupled ultrasonic's (ACU) is a novel non-destructive assessment method with significant improvements in reproducibility and scanning capabilities with respect to traditional contact techniques used for wood. As a part of an ongoing project, ACU measurements in through-transmission mode were performed on samples consisting of two spruce solid wood boards glued together with polyurethane adhesive introducing defined delaminated areas. Ultrasonic scanning with high resolution was performed to image the presence or absence of glue. The geometry of the delaminated area and features of the wood structure have been visualized. Future work is planned for inspection of more complex glued timber objects.
