Snow Cover Recession in an Alpine Ecological System

Abstract

For the testsite MAB-Davos a snow cover recession map has been derived representing the local beginnings of the aper-period for the season 1982. The map has been integrated into a Geographie Information System (GIS) containing several kinds of information describing the physical conditions of the testsite. The snow cover recession map is found to be a fundamental variable influencing a number of layers within the ecological data set. It is shown quantitatively, for example, how snow cover recession and floral associations are related. This assists in vegetation mapping and can be used to simulate vegetation. That opens, furthermore, the opportunity to make scenarios in order to estimate the effects of certain changes.
