Segmentation of Volume Data by Contour Fragment Grouping

Abstract

We present a contour propagation approach to segment radiological images in a slice-by-slice manner. The image plane is first divided into subregions small enough to allow reconstruction of the outline of any object present in the image by a merging technique. A discrete optimization algorithm initialized by a model contour is used to merge together an optimal set of subregions, giving an outline of the object in the current slice. The objective function for the discrete optimization is based on the analysis of the shape properties of a candidate outline.
